Recent reports analyzing the iPhone 16 Pro Max bill of materials (BOM) reveal that the latest flagship model from Apple is more expensive to produce than its predecessor. The iPhone 15 Pro Max had a BOM of $453 (roughly ₹38,000), while the iPhone 16 Pro Max comes in at $485 (roughly ₹40,000), a difference of $32 (roughly ₹2,500). This increase is primarily attributed to upgrades in the display, rear camera, and chipset.

Key Components and Costs

  • Display and Rear Camera: These are the most expensive components, each costing $80 (roughly ₹6,600) and accounting for 16% of the total BOM. This represents an increase from the iPhone 15 Pro Max, where the display and rear camera cost $75 (roughly ₹6,200) and $70 (roughly ₹5,800) respectively.
  • Camera Control Button: The new Camera Control button costs $19 (roughly ₹1,500), a slight increase from the $16 (roughly ₹1,300) cost of the Action Button on the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
  • RAM: Updated RAM technology in the iPhone 16 Pro Max costs $17 (roughly ₹1,400), compared to $12 (roughly ₹1,000) in the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
  • A18 Pro Chip: The new Bionic chip contributes $45 (roughly ₹3,700) to the BOM.
  • Storage: Internal storage adds $25 (roughly ₹2,000) to the manufacturing cost.

Price and Profit Margin

The iPhone 16 Pro Max has a starting price of ₹1,44,900 for the 256GB model in India. With a BOM of ₹40,000, this suggests a significant gross margin for Apple on each unit sold.

Key Features of the iPhone 16 Pro Max

The iPhone 16 Pro Max features a 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate (ProMotion) and up to 2,000 nits peak brightness. It is powered by the A18 Pro chip and boasts a triple rear camera setup (48MP wide, 48MP ultra-wide, 12MP telephoto) and a 12MP TrueDepth front camera.
